In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to lose sight of our priorities and let discipline slip through our fingers. Jesse Itzler's Living with a SEAL serves as a powerful reminder of the strength we possess when we commit to our goals and embrace discomfort.
Jesse's decision to have a Navy SEAL live with him for a month was a game-changer. The experience pushed him beyond his perceived limits and reinforced lessons that resonate deeply with anyone striving for personal growth.

Here are 4 of my takeaways on the book:
1. Never Quit (Especially When It Gets Tough)
The SEAL's rule was simple: never quit. Whether facing grueling workouts or mental challenges, giving up wasn't an option.
Reflecting on my own journey, I've realized that we often underestimate our capabilities. We convince ourselves that certain tasks are too hard or that we're not cut out for them. But the truth is, we're capable of much more than we think. When the urge to quit arises, remember that pushing through discomfort leads to growth.
Realizing everyone is going to have setbacks and trials in there life helps - Amor Fati - but the people that use those as fuel to continue to work hard, to learn and to grow will become more!
I will add a reference to my software founder journey and how it paid off not to quit in the spring of 2025!
2. You Are Capable of More Than You Think
Our bodies and minds are designed to adapt and overcome. Jesse's transformation during his month with the SEAL is a testament to the power of showing up and putting in the work.
Age is just a number. As men over 30, we might feel that our peak years are behind us, but that's far from the truth. With dedication and consistency, we can achieve remarkable feats. It's about making the decision to start and committing to the journey.
Once you make that decision join a community of brothers that will keep you going and push you to do even more.
Here are some challenges that were in the book:
100 pullups with only a 45 seconds rest in between sets - How long will take you?
1000 pushups in a single 24 hour period
Jesse and the Seal ran over 200 miles in 30 days and pushed their pace from a 10min to a 7:30 min by the end of the month
Jesse had no idea what he was capable of and proved that will will and hard work he could achieve amazing things.
3. Protect Your Priorities
Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. The SEAL instilled in Jesse the importance of owning his day, starting with early mornings and structured routines.
I've often emphasized that we all have time for the things and people that are a priority. It's about making conscious choices and setting boundaries. When we protect our priorities, we create a life that aligns with our values and aspirations.
What are you true priorities? Look at your actions and that will show you your true priorities.
4. Mental Toughness Is a Superpower
Mental toughness is cultivated through consistent effort and resilience. It's waking up early to train, even when the bed feels too comfortable. It's completing that last rep when your body is screaming to stop. It's choosing to focus on your goals amidst distractions.
In 2025, developing mental toughness will be a defining factor in achieving our potential. It's about embracing challenges and viewing them as opportunities for growth.
Have you set goals for 2025? I truly hope so. I really hope you have some that will push you to the life you desire. Go ahead and grab the Big Ass calendar to plan some of those goals.
Embrace Your SEAL Moment
Reading this book prompted me to reflect on my own life. Where have I been holding back? What excuses have I been making? I slowed down enough to really look at what has been holding me back and came to terms with it!
For me, it's about embracing discomfort and pushing beyond my self-imposed limits. It's about showing up for myself and those who matter most. As I often say, only take on what serves the future you.
If you're a man over 30, I highly recommend reading Living with a SEAL. It's a powerful reminder that we're capable of more than we realize and that with discipline and determination, we can achieve greatness. I read it in 4 days.
2025 is here. What steps will you take to become the best version of yourself?
